courses on Career Paths WBT - The Changing Career Strategies - Engineers India
Limited
During the research on career pathing by organizations, Mr.
K.M. Mittal, the General Manager of EIL was interviewed.
Mr. Mittal expressed the opinion that each organization
charts its own promotion level, which depends on the performance of the
employees. The assessment of the
employee at EIL regarding career pathing is done on the following bases.
- The job
potential of the employee is reviewed.
- His
performance is discussed with his seniors.
- His
relation with juniors at work is observed.
- A reviewer
reviews the report to avoid prejudice.
At EIL, there is a two-tier appraisal system. WHITE FORM is given both to the
organization where the employee works and to a different organization, which
deals with the employee too.
The assessment of the employee is filled in by both the
organizations and then a chief boss reviews the WHITE FORM.
Accordingly, the employee is judged and his career path is
designed by the organization.
Further, the organization interviews the employees whereby
they express their deficiency.
Similarly, Training Need Surveys are conducted and a communication
is build with the Training Department. Here a Training Calendar is designed for the employees
to understand their training needs and help them attain their desired career
goals.
To sum up
As organizations continue on into this new century, more
companies are realizing the advantages of retaining highly trained and
experienced employees. Many have already realized that the cost of recruiting
and training a new employee can far outweigh the costs of some career
development interventions. That alone could be reason to implement a
comprehensive career development program. Overall employee satisfaction,
dedication, and loyalty to the company are added benefits. As a final note,
employees should remember that they can lobby for some of these interventions,
and if their organization is unwilling, some interventions, such as exploring
alternative career paths, career pathing and possibly a sabbatical, can be
pursued by the employee on his or her own initiative.
